Jeep Tour: Srtner — the Heart Lake in the Meghri Mountains

"Srtner — the Heart Lake in the Meghri Mountains" is a two-day journey to the very south of Armenia, to one of Syunik's most unusual high-mountain lakes.

The main goal of our journey is Lake Kaptach, also known locally as Srtner — "Hearts."

The lake sits in the Meghri Mountains at an altitude of about 3,283 meters above sea level. From above, its outline resembles a heart — hence the name.

But Srtner is not just the lake itself.

It's a long road through Syunik, a night in Meghri, genuine high-mountain off-road driving, 4×4 jeeps, mountain panoramas, and a chance to see the Armenia that far from every traveler ever reaches.

Day 1 — The Road to Southern Armenia

Yerevan → Syunik

We leave Yerevan early in the morning and begin the great journey to the south of the country.

The road runs through Armenia's mountainous regions toward Syunik.

Stops are planned along the way for rest, photos, and meals.

The further south we go, the more the scenery changes — high mountains, deep gorges, mountain passes, and an entirely different nature of Southern Armenia.

Lichk

We arrive in the Lichk area — a mountain village of the Meghri community.

It's from here that our off-road section of the route to Lake Srtner begins the next day.

Lichk is surrounded by mountains, gorges, rivers, and waterfalls, and serves as a kind of gateway to the highlands of the Meghri range.

Meghri

We continue on to Meghri — the southernmost city in Armenia.

Meghri lies among the mountains not far from the Araks river valley.

The climate here is noticeably warmer than in most regions of Armenia. The region is known for its pomegranates, figs, persimmons, and other southern fruits.

After the long drive, we check into a hotel or guesthouse.

Overnight in Meghri

After check-in — free time and rest.

The overnight stay is not just for comfort: an early departure and a full high-mountain program await the next day.

One night's accommodation is included in the tour price.

Day 2 — Jeep Tour to Lake Srtner

Early departure

After breakfast or an early gathering, depending on the accommodation, we set off toward Lichk.

Here we transfer onto 4×4 off-road vehicles.

From this moment, the main adventure part of the journey begins.

Jeep Tour through the Meghri Mountains

The regular road ends.

We begin climbing along mountain off-road terrain toward the high-altitude lake.

The route runs along dirt and rocky roads, across mountain slopes, streams, and open high-mountain spaces.

As we gain altitude, the scenery changes.

Meghri's warm climate is left far below, while alpine meadows and rugged high-mountain landscapes appear around us.

Above 3,000 meters

We gradually climb above the 3,000-meter mark above sea level.

Up here there are no settlements, shops, restaurants, or the usual tourist infrastructure.

Only mountains, natural springs, alpine meadows, and silence.

Along the way we stop at the most beautiful accessible viewpoints.

Lake Srtner — Kaptach

The main point of our journey is Lake Kaptach (Srtner).

The lake lies at approximately 3,283 meters above sea level, in the high-mountain part of the Meghri Mountains.

The local name "Srtner" translates as "Hearts."

This name comes from the lake's unusual shape, which is especially noticeable from above.

Surrounded by mountains, far from settlements and roads, Srtner looks completely different from Armenia's familiar tourist lakes.

Here what matters is not infrastructure, but nature itself.

Time by the lake

Time is set aside for rest, photos, and a walk by the lake.

The length of the walking portion depends on the state of the high-mountain road and how far the off-road vehicles can safely climb.

Our program is built specifically as a jeep tour, so we try to cover most of the mountain distance by 4×4 vehicle.

Panoramas of the Meghri Mountains

On the way back we make additional stops at accessible panoramic viewpoints.

From here you can see the high-mountain expanses of southern Syunik and the Meghri range.

After finishing the jeep portion, we return to the Lichk area, transfer back to the main vehicle, and begin the road back to Yerevan.

Return to Yerevan — late in the evening of the second day.
