Jeep Tour: Tsaghats Kar and Smbataberd — Fortresses of Vayots Dzor

"Tsaghats Kar and Smbataberd — Fortresses of Vayots Dzor" is a journey along mountain roads to two outstanding medieval monuments hidden high above the Yeghegis valley.
Here, history is impossible to separate from nature.
To reach the main points of the route, we switch to off-road vehicles and head out along the mountain roads of Vayots Dzor — to places ordinary tour buses never reach.
Yeghegis
From Yerevan we head toward Vayots Dzor and the historic village of Yeghegis.
In the Middle Ages this territory was one of the important centers of the region, developing especially actively during the era of the princely Orbelian family.
It is from here that the mountain part of our journey begins.
Jeep tour
We switch to 4×4 off-road vehicles and begin the climb along the mountain road.
The asphalt is left behind.
Ahead lie dirt and rocky stretches, climbs, open mountain expanses, and panoramas of the Yeghegis valley.
Stops for photos and rest are included along the way.
Tsaghats Kar Monastery
The first major historical stop is the Tsaghats Kar monastery complex.
The complex is located in the mountains, far from modern settlements.
The main surviving structures date to the 10th century. Tsaghats Kar is linked to the development of medieval Syunik and was not only a religious but also a cultural center of its time.
Particular attention is drawn to the ancient churches, stone carvings, khachkars, and surviving elements of the monastery complex.
But it is not only the architecture that impresses here.
Tsaghats Kar is surrounded by mountains and nearly untouched nature, so the road to the monastery itself creates a sense of traveling back in time.
Mountain panoramas
After getting to know Tsaghats Kar, we continue our jeep route.
Along the way, wide views open up onto the mountains of Vayots Dzor, the gorges, and the Yeghegis valley.
We will stop at the most beautiful accessible panoramic viewpoints.
The next destination of the journey is one of the most impressive medieval fortresses of the region.
Smbataberd Fortress
Smbataberd is located on a high mountain ridge and is naturally protected on several sides by deep gorges.
This location made the fortress an important defensive stronghold.
Smbataberd already existed in the Middle Ages and was later linked to the princely dynasties of Syunik and the Orbelians.
Massive fortress walls, defensive towers, entrances, and remains of interior structures have survived to this day.
A walk through the fortress
After the jeep ascent, a walk on foot through the territory of Smbataberd is included.
You can walk along the surviving walls, see the layout of the fortress, and imagine just how massive a defensive structure it was many centuries ago.
From up here, magnificent views open onto the surrounding gorges and mountains.
There will be time here for rest and photos.
After visiting Smbataberd, we return to the off-road vehicles, descend from the mountains, and head back to Yerevan.
