Jeep Tour: Tsakhkari — the Hidden Lake of the Zangezur Mountains

Tsakhkari is one of the high-altitude lakes of the Zangezur Range, hidden among the rugged mountains of southern Syunik. The lake is also known by the names Tsakkar and Sagkar.

It sits at an altitude of roughly 3,270–3,272 meters above sea level, with a surface area of about 3 hectares.

Tsakhkari lies about 2 kilometers east of Lake Kaputan, but it is its own separate high-mountain route, with its own jeep track and a completely distinct atmosphere. There is no usual tourist infrastructure here.

To reach the lake you have to leave the asphalt far below and climb into the Zangezur Mountains in 4×4 off-road vehicles. This is a journey for those interested in Armenia beyond the standard excursion routes.

Day 1 — Yerevan → Syunik

Early departure from Yerevan. At 07:00 we leave Yerevan and head south. A long road through Vayots Dzor and Syunik awaits us. Stops are planned along the way for rest, meals and photos. Gradually the lowland landscapes give way to gorges, mountain passes and the mountains of southern Armenia.

The road to Kapan and Kajaran. We continue through Syunik toward Kapan and Kajaran. Kajaran lies amid the Zangezur Mountains and serves as one of the main starting points for high-mountain routes in this area. It is from here that our real off-road journey begins the next day.

Accommodation. After the long drive, we settle into a hotel or guesthouse in the Kapan or Kajaran area. Free time is set aside for rest and preparation for the next day. One night's accommodation is included in the tour price. We recommend getting a good rest: the second day starts early and takes place at an altitude of over 3,000 meters.

Day 2 — Jeep Tour to Lake Tsakhkari

Early start. In the morning we head to the start of the mountain route. We switch to prepared 4×4 off-road vehicles. This is where the main adventure part of the trip begins.

The Zangezur Mountains. We begin the climb up the mountain road. The jeep route runs through the high-altitude part of the Zangezur Range. Real off-road terrain awaits us: • Dirt roads • Rocky sections • Ascents and descents • Uneven mountain terrain • Possible muddy stretches • Mountain streams As we climb, the vegetation changes and increasingly sweeping views of the Zangezur Mountains open up around us.

High altitude. We gradually climb above the 3,000-meter mark. At this altitude the usual infrastructure practically disappears. Around us are mountain peaks, alpine meadows, rocky slopes and high-mountain silence. We make stops along the way at safe panoramic points.

Lake Tsakhkari. The main destination of the journey is Lake Tsakhkari. Altitude — about 3,270 meters above sea level. Area — about 3 hectares. Tsakhkari lies in the summit part of the Zangezur Range. It is also called Tsakkar or Sagkar. The lake is surrounded by high-mountain slopes and, for most of the year, sits in a harsh mountain climate. The best time to visit comes once the high-mountain road has been cleared of snow. In summer you can see a mix of green alpine meadows, mountain peaks and patches of snow remaining on the slopes.

Rest by the lake. After arrival there is time set aside for rest and photos. You can walk along the accessible part of the shore and see the lake from different angles. The length of the stop is determined by the mountain guide, taking into account: • The weather • The condition of the participants • The state of the road • The overall route schedule

Panoramic viewpoints. On the way back there are stops at the most beautiful accessible panoramic points. From up high, views open over the Zangezur Range and the high-mountain expanses of Syunik. After the jeep part is finished, we return to the main transport and head to Yerevan. Return — late in the evening of the second day.
