Rapi — the Hidden Lake of Aragats

Rapi — the Hidden Lake of Aragats is a high-mountain journey to one of Armenia's little-known lakes, set on the northern slopes of Aragats at more than 3,000 metres. It is a route for those who want to see the real high-altitude Aragats without a long, many-kilometre ascent.

Beyond Geghadzor the ordinary road comes to an end. We switch to off-road vehicles and head across alpine meadows and rough mountain tracks to Lake Rapi and the striking North Wall of Aragats.

We leave Yerevan early in the morning and drive to Aragatsotn Province. Our road leads to the village of Geghadzor, which sits at the foot of the northern slopes of the Aragats massif. This is where the adventure begins: the group transfers to 4×4 vehicles and we start climbing into the highlands.

From Geghadzor we set off along mountain roads towards Lake Rapi, leaving the asphalt far behind. The route crosses the alpine zone of Aragats, with dirt and rocky tracks, mountain streams, open meadows and volcanic landscapes. As we gain height the scenery grows ever wilder and more impressive. The drive itself is an essential part of this journey.

Along the way one of the most spectacular parts of the massif gradually opens up before us — the North Wall of Aragats. Aragats is the highest mountain massif in present-day Armenia, and its highest point is the North Summit at about 4,090 metres. On this tour, however, we do not climb to the summit. Our aim is to drive deep into the highlands by 4×4 and see the North Wall of Aragats from an entirely different angle.

The highlight of the trip is Lake Rapi. It lies in the northern part of the Aragats massif at about 3,001 metres above sea level, roughly 9 kilometres from the village of Geghadzor.

Rapi is small, but its setting is what makes the place special. All around are alpine meadows, mountain streams, volcanic terrain and the massive North Wall of Aragats. There is no conventional tourist infrastructure here — only mountains, the lake and the silence of the heights.

By the lake there is time to rest, take photos and go for a short walk. You can stroll along the accessible part of the shore, take in the surrounding mountain views or simply spend time in nature. There is no long mandatory hike in our programme: we cover the main high-altitude distance by 4×4.

On the way up and back down we stop at the most beautiful accessible viewpoints. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the stops may vary slightly. Aragats looks different every time — alpine meadows, clouds, rocky slopes, streams and the wide open spaces of the highlands.

After our rest at Rapi we return by 4×4 to Geghadzor, then transfer back to the main vehicle and head home to Yerevan.

Rapi — the Hidden Lake of Aragats is for lovers of mountains, high-altitude lakes, beautiful natural scenery and genuine off-road routes. It will especially appeal to those who want to reach about 3,000 metres without a difficult, hours-long climb. No mountaineering experience is required. You only need to be ready for rough mountain tracks, altitude, short walks over natural terrain and quickly changing weather.

Rapi is the other side of Aragats: no crowds, no asphalt, just mountains and high-altitude silence.

How the jeep tour works

On arrival in Geghadzor the group transfers to 4×4 vehicles, and the high-altitude climb to Lake Rapi begins.

This is genuine mountain off-road terrain, so during the drive you can expect:

  • Dirt roads
  • Rocky sections
  • Uneven climbs and descents
  • Crossings of small mountain streams
  • Muddy stretches after rain
  • Heavy jolting while driving

Road conditions vary with the season and the weather.

The walking part of the route

This is first and foremost a jeep tour, not a full hike on Aragats. We cover the main high-altitude distance by 4×4. The walking part is short and takes place around the lake and at the viewpoints.

Even so, keep in mind the natural high-mountain terrain:

  • Stones
  • Grass
  • Uneven ground
  • Small climbs and descents
  • Wet or muddy patches after rain

No special fitness is required.

Professional mountain guide

A professional mountain guide accompanies the group on the high-altitude part of the route.

The guide sets the group's pace, stays with participants by the lake and at the viewpoints, and makes decisions based on the current weather and road conditions.

On the high-altitude section, please follow the guide's advice and do not wander far from the group on your own.

What footwear you need

This route requires comfortable closed shoes with a good non-slip sole. Flip-flops, open sandals, dress shoes and smooth-soled footwear are not suitable.

We recommend:

  • Hiking shoes
  • Closed trainers with a good tread

After rain, grass, stones and soil can be wet and slippery.

What to wear

Lake Rapi lies at about 3,000 metres, so the temperature here can be very different from Yerevan. Even in summer it can be cool and windy in the highlands.

We recommend dressing in layers:

  • T-shirt or base layer
  • Comfortable long trousers
  • Warm sweater or fleece
  • Windbreaker
  • Waterproof jacket or raincoat
  • Hat

Bring something warm even in summer.

What to bring

We recommend a small, comfortable backpack with:

  • Warm sweater or fleece
  • Windbreaker
  • Raincoat
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • A small personal snack
  • Personal medication if needed
  • Wet and dry wipes
  • Power bank
  • Spare socks — optional

Bottled water is provided by Amaras Tour.

Altitude of about 3,000 metres

Lake Rapi lies at about 3,001 metres above sea level. At this altitude your body may react differently than in the city.

Some participants may experience:

  • Tiring more quickly
  • Shortness of breath when active
  • Headache
  • Mild dizziness

There is no need to hurry on the walks. If you develop a severe headache, marked weakness, dizziness or any other noticeable discomfort, tell the mountain guide straight away.

Weather on Aragats

Weather in the highlands can change very quickly, and it directly affects the condition of the off-road track. If a section becomes unsafe, the mountain guide and drivers may change the furthest reachable point or adjust the programme.

Even in the warm season you may encounter:

  • Strong wind
  • Fog
  • Rain
  • Hail
  • A sharp drop in temperature
  • Patches of snow early in the season

The group's safety always comes first.

Seasonality of the route

Rapi is a seasonal high-altitude jeep route.

The best time to run it depends on snow cover, rainfall and road conditions, so before every trip we check that the high-altitude part of the route can be reached safely.

Food

A full lunch is not included in the tour price and is paid separately.

Since much of the programme takes place in the highlands, far from restaurants and shops, we recommend bringing a small personal snack. Good options:

  • Sandwiches
  • Fruit
  • Nuts and dried fruit
  • Energy bars

Bottled water and treats from Amaras Tour are included.

Who this tour is for

The route suits active travellers who cope well with:

  • Altitude of about 3,000 metres
  • Rough mountain tracks
  • Jolting during the jeep section
  • Short walks over natural terrain
  • Quickly changing mountain weather

No mountaineering experience is required. If you get badly carsick on mountain roads, please take this into account before booking.

Tour duration

The whole tour takes about 10–11 hours.

The actual return time may vary depending on traffic, the condition of the mountain road, the weather and the length of the stops.

The order of the programme and the furthest point reachable by 4×4 may be adjusted on the day depending on weather and road conditions.
