Tsaghkari: The Hidden Lake of the Zangezur Mountains
Tsaghkari is one of the high-mountain lakes of the Zangezur Range, hidden among the rugged peaks of southern Syunik. The lake is also known as Tsakkar and Sagkar. It lies at roughly 3,270–3,272 metres above sea level and covers about 3 hectares.
Tsaghkari sits about 2 kilometres east of Lake Kaputan, yet it is a route in its own right, with its own jeep track and a very particular atmosphere. There is no ordinary tourist infrastructure here. To reach the lake you leave the asphalt far below and climb into the Zangezur Mountains in 4×4 off-road vehicles. This journey is for people who are curious about Armenia beyond the standard sightseeing routes.
Day 1 starts with an early departure from Yerevan. At 07:00 we leave the city and head for the south of Armenia. A long drive through Vayots Dzor and Syunik lies ahead, with stops along the way for rest, meals and photos. Little by little the flat landscapes give way to the gorges, passes and mountains of southern Armenia.
We continue through Syunik towards Kapan and Kajaran. Kajaran sits among the Zangezur Mountains and is one of the main starting points for high-mountain routes in the area. This is where our real off-road adventure will begin the next day.
After the long drive we check into a hotel or guesthouse near Kapan or Kajaran. There is free time to rest and get ready for the next day. One night's accommodation is included in the tour price. We recommend getting a good rest: day two starts early and is spent above 3,000 metres.
Day 2 is the jeep tour to Lake Tsaghkari. In the morning we drive to the start of the mountain route and switch to prepared 4×4 vehicles. This is where the main adventure part of the trip begins.
We start climbing the mountain road. The jeep route crosses the high part of the Zangezur Range, and genuine off-road driving awaits: dirt tracks, rocky stretches, climbs and descents, uneven mountain terrain, possible muddy sections and mountain streams. As we gain height the vegetation changes and ever broader views of the Zangezur Mountains open up around us.
Gradually we climb above the 3,000-metre mark. At this altitude familiar infrastructure all but disappears. All around are mountain peaks, alpine meadows, rocky slopes and the silence of the high country. Along the way we stop at safe panoramic viewpoints.
The main goal of the journey is Lake Tsaghkari, at about 3,270 metres above sea level and roughly 3 hectares in area. Tsaghkari lies in the summit zone of the Zangezur Range. The lake is surrounded by high slopes and spends most of the year in a harsh mountain climate. The best time to visit comes once the high road is clear of snow. In summer you can see green alpine meadows, mountain peaks and the patches of snow still lingering on the slopes all at once.
On arrival there is time to rest and take photos. You can walk along the accessible part of the shore and see the lake from different angles. The length of the stop is decided by the mountain guide, taking into account the weather, how the participants are feeling, the state of the road and the overall schedule.
On the way back we stop at the most beautiful accessible viewpoints, with views over the Zangezur Range and the high expanses of Syunik. Once the jeep section is over we return to the main vehicle and set off for Yerevan, arriving late in the evening of the second day.
Tsaghkari: The Hidden Lake of the Zangezur Mountains suits travellers who want to see the real high-mountain Syunik. We especially recommend it to fans of jeep tours, high-mountain lakes, mountains, off-road travel, photography, wild nature and unusual routes. No special mountaineering experience is needed, but you should be comfortable with a long drive, rough roads and spending time above 3,200 metres. Tsaghkari is more than a dot on the map. Zangezur Reserve territory
The lake lies within the Zangezur State Reserve.
Visiting the area may involve:

Important: a border area
Tsaghkari lies in a high-mountain area not far from the state border.
That is why this route cannot run without first checking the current situation.
Before every trip we check:

If access to the area is closed, Amaras Tour does not run this route.
How the jeep tour works
The high-mountain section is driven in 4×4 off-road vehicles.
The route from the Kajaran area towards the lake is roughly 18 km of mountain road.
The elevation gain on the jeep section is about 700 metres.
The track follows the natural mountain terrain. Expect:
- Rocks
- Dirt
- Potholes
- Steep sections
- Mountain streams
- Mud after rain
- Heavy jolting
This is real off-road driving, not an ordinary sightseeing drive.
Walking section
Unlike Kaputan, Tsaghkari has an existing 4×4 track leading directly towards the lake.
However, we cannot guarantee that the vehicles will reach the shore itself in every condition.
Where the jeeps actually stop depends on the state of the road and on the decision of the driver and the mountain guide.
So be ready for a short walk over high-mountain terrain.
There is no long, classic hike in the programme.
Altitude: about 3,270 metres
The lake sits at a serious altitude.
Above 3,000 metres even an ordinary walk can feel harder. You may experience:
- Shortness of breath
- Quick fatigue
- Headache
- Dizziness
Move at a calm pace. If you feel noticeably unwell, tell the mountain guide straight away.
Footwear
Closed shoes with a good tread are essential.
Best options:
- Hiking boots
- Trail running shoes
Not suitable: flip-flops, open sandals, city shoes and shoes with smooth soles.
Clothing
At around 3,270 metres it is much colder than in Yerevan or Kapan.
Even in summer you will need:
- Comfortable long trousers
- A warm sweater or fleece
- A windbreaker
- A raincoat or waterproof jacket
- A hat
Warm clothing is a must, even in summer.

Weather
Mountain weather can change very quickly. Expect the possibility of:
- Strong wind
- Rain
- Fog
- Hail
- A sudden drop in temperature
- Patches of snow
Good weather in Kapan or Kajaran does not mean conditions will be the same at the lake.
Season
Tsaghkari has a short high-mountain season.
The route mainly runs in summer and early autumn, once the road is clear of snow.
The most favourable period is usually July to September, but every date is confirmed individually.
Early in the season there may still be snow on the route.
Professional mountain guide
The group is accompanied by a professional mountain guide.
On this route a guide is especially important because of:

Safety
Participants must not, on their own:
- Wander far from the group
- Change the route
- Head towards border areas

Changes to or cancellation of the high-mountain section
The route runs only when conditions are safe.
The high-mountain section may be changed or cancelled in case of:
- Closed access
- Restrictions from the relevant authorities
- Bad weather
- Dangerous road conditions
- Thick fog
- High water levels
- Other circumstances affecting safety
