From Ararat to Ancient Geghard

The main advantage of a private trip is that there is no large group and no rigid group schedule. Our journey first heads for the Ararat Valley. As we leave Yerevan behind, one of Armenia's most recognisable landscapes opens up before us — Mount Ararat. Our first stop lies almost at the border itself: the ancient monastery of Khor Virap. Khor Virap is one of the most symbolic places in Armenia, and its name translates as “deep dungeon”. According to Armenian Christian tradition, it was here that King Trdat III imprisoned Gregory the Illuminator in a deep pit, where he spent about 13 years. Gregory was later released and played a key role in Armenia's adoption of Christianity in the early 4th century. Today visitors can climb down into the underground chamber linked to this story.

But Khor Virap is famous for more than its spiritual history. It offers one of the most celebrated views of Greater and Lesser Ararat, and on a clear day the mountain seems remarkably close. On a private tour there is no need to rush here: we leave plenty of time to explore the monastery, walk around and take photos. After Khor Virap we change direction and head for the Azat Reservoir. This is a completely different landscape: the water is surrounded by dry volcanic mountains and rocky slopes, and its colour keeps changing with the season and the light. It is one of the most beautiful natural photo spots on the route. The private tour includes a stop at a safe panoramic viewpoint, and if the weather and flight regulations allow, this is the place to arrange some spectacular drone footage.

The next major stop is the Garni archaeological complex. The history of this area goes back much further than its famous temple: archaeological finds show that people were present here as early as prehistoric times. The highlight of the complex is a temple from the 1st century AD, which represents an entirely different chapter of Armenian history — the era before Christianity. The temple stands on a high plateau above the gorge of the Azat River, surrounded by basalt cliffs. The grounds also preserve the remains of an ancient fortress, royal buildings and a bathhouse with a mosaic floor. This place lets you step, quite literally, from ancient pre-Christian Armenia into the next part of the route — Christian Geghard.

From Garni we descend into the Azat River gorge. Here lies one of Armenia's most unusual natural monuments — the Symphony of Stones, also known as the Basalt Organ. Huge natural basalt columns tower above the gorge. Many of them are five- or six-sided and truly resemble the pipes of a giant organ. Despite their almost perfect geometry, they are not the work of human hands: these structures were formed by natural geological processes in volcanic rock. There is time for a walk through the gorge and for photos.

The final historical stop of the journey is Geghard Monastery, one of the outstanding works of medieval Armenian architecture. The monastery's history begins in the early Christian era. It was originally called Ayrivank, “the Cave Monastery”. The present architectural ensemble largely took shape in the 13th century, and the main church was built in 1215.

But Geghard's most unusual feature lies inside. Some of its churches, chapels and burial chambers are not built from individual stones at all — the rooms are literally carved straight into the rock. Here you can especially feel how architecture and the surrounding nature merge, with high cliffs almost encircling the monastery. Together with the Upper Azat Valley, Geghard is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In one of the rock-cut parts of the complex there is a sacred natural spring. It was revered even before Christianity spread and later became part of the monastic tradition; the early monastery grew up right beside it. The word “geghard” means “spear” in Armenian. The name is tied to the Christian tradition of the Spear that pierced Christ. The relic was kept at the monastery for a long time, which is how it received its present name — Geghardavank, “the Monastery of the Spear”.

After visiting Geghard we head back to Yerevan. At the end of the journey the car drops you off at the address of your choice — your hotel, apartment or another place agreed in advance. The total duration of the trip is approximately 8–9 hours.
