Kaputan Jeep Tour — Zangezur's High-Altitude Lake

Lake Kaputan is one of the most striking high-altitude lakes in Syunik. In everyday speech it's often called Lake Gogi, but its official cadastral name is Kaputan. The lake sits high on the Zangezur mountain range, at an altitude of roughly 3,202 meters above sea level. It covers an area of about 10 hectares, holds a volume of around 1.5 million cubic meters, and reaches a maximum depth of about 22 meters. Kaputan is significantly larger than many of Armenia's high-altitude lakes. The site is surrounded by the rugged peaks of Zangezur and has almost no tourist infrastructure, so the road to the lake is already an adventure in itself.

Day 1 — The Road into the Heart of Syunik. We leave Yerevan early in the morning and head south. Ahead lies a long drive through Vayots Dzor and Syunik. Along the way there are stops for rest, meals, and photos as needed. The route gradually becomes more mountainous, and past Goris the road plunges deeper into Syunik.

We continue through Kapan toward Kajaran, a town set among the high peaks of the Zangezur range. The Kajaran area is the starting point for the high-altitude leg of the journey. Kaputan lies about 8 kilometers southwest of Kajaran, but straight-line distance says nothing about how demanding the road is — the mountains, elevation changes, and off-road terrain turn those few kilometers into a genuine expedition route.

After the long drive, we settle into a hotel or guesthouse in the Kajaran or Kapan area. In the evening there's time to rest and prepare for the next day. An early night matters, since it's best to start the high-altitude leg in the morning, when weather conditions tend to be more stable. One night's accommodation is included in the tour price.

Day 2 — Jeep Expedition to Kaputan. Early in the morning we head to the start of the high-altitude road and switch to prepared 4×4 off-road vehicles. From here the main part of the journey begins.

The climb follows old mountain jeep tracks, gradually gaining altitude from around 2,000 meters to over 3,000 meters. Along the way you may encounter rocky sections, steep climbs, uneven dirt roads, mountain stream crossings, narrow stretches, heavy jolting, and muddy patches after rain. This isn't an ordinary dirt road — it's a full high-altitude off-road route.

As the ascent continues, a completely different Syunik opens up. The forested, populated zone falls far below. Alpine meadows, rocky massifs, high mountain valleys, and the peaks of the Zangezur range appear all around. There's almost no familiar tourist infrastructure here. Along the way we stop at the most beautiful and safest panoramic points.

The jeeps climb to the highest point that's safe to reach on a given date. Above that, the old jeep track deteriorates significantly, and the final stretch to the lake is covered on foot. When access conditions are good the walking section is relatively short, though its actual length depends on how high the vehicles can safely go. The last stretch follows natural mountain terrain and may include large boulders, scree, uneven slopes, short climbs, and a descent straight down to the lake. So despite being a jeep tour, participants need to be physically ready for a short high-altitude hike.

The main destination is Lake Kaputan, sitting at about 3,202 meters above sea level. It covers roughly 10 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of about 22 meters. The lake lies among the peaks of the Zangezur range and has a rich water color that shifts with the sun, clouds, and weather. At this altitude there are almost no traces of civilization — just mountains, rock, alpine vegetation, and high-altitude silence.

After arriving there's time to rest, take photos, go for a short walk, and take in the lake from the available viewpoints. How long we stay is decided by the mountain guide based on the weather and how the group is doing.

After resting we begin the descent — back to the off-road vehicles, then down the high-altitude road to the Kajaran area. We switch back to the main transport and head back to Yerevan. Return is in the late evening of the second day.
