Kaputan — the High-Mountain Lake of Zangezur

Lake Kaputan is one of the most striking high-mountain lakes in Syunik. Locally it is often called Gogi Lake, but its official cadastral name is Kaputan. The lake lies in the upper reaches of the Zangezur ridge, at roughly 3,202 metres above sea level.

It covers about 10 hectares, holds around 1.5 million cubic metres of water and reaches a maximum depth of about 22 metres, which makes Kaputan considerably larger than most of Armenia's high-mountain lakes. It is surrounded by the rugged peaks of Zangezur and has practically no tourist infrastructure, so the road to the lake is an adventure in its own right.

Day 1 takes us into the heart of Syunik. We leave Yerevan early in the morning and head south through Vayots Dzor and Syunik on a long drive, with stops along the way for rest, meals and photos. The route grows steadily more mountainous, and after Goris the road winds deeper into Syunik.

We continue through Kapan towards Kajaran, a town set among the high mountains of the Zangezur ridge. The Kajaran area is the starting point for the high-mountain part of our journey. Kaputan lies only about 8 kilometres south-west of Kajaran, but the straight-line distance says nothing about how hard the road is: mountains, sharp changes in altitude and off-road terrain turn those few kilometres into a real expedition route.

After the long drive we check into a hotel or guesthouse in the Kajaran or Kapan area. The evening is for resting and getting ready for the next day. An early night matters, because the high-mountain section is best started in the morning, when the weather is usually more stable. One night of accommodation is included in the price.

Day 2 is the jeep expedition to Kaputan. Early in the morning we drive to the start of the mountain road and switch to prepared 4×4 vehicles, and this is where the main part of the journey begins. The climb follows old mountain jeep tracks, gradually rising from around 2,000 metres to over 3,000 metres.

Expect rocky stretches, steep climbs, uneven dirt road, mountain stream crossings, narrow sections, heavy jolting and muddy patches after rain. This is not an ordinary dirt road; it is a genuine high-mountain off-road route.

As we climb, a completely different Syunik opens up. The forests and villages are left far below, giving way to alpine meadows, rock massifs, high valleys and the peaks of the Zangezur ridge. There is almost no conventional tourist infrastructure up here. Along the way we stop at the most beautiful and safest viewpoints.

The jeeps drive up to the highest point that is safely reachable on the day. Beyond it the old jeep track deteriorates sharply, and the final stretch to the lake is on foot. When the track is in good condition the walk is fairly short, but its actual length depends on how high the vehicles can safely go. The last section crosses natural mountain terrain and may include large boulders, scree, uneven slopes, short climbs and a descent right down to the water. So even though this is a jeep tour, participants should be fit enough for a short high-altitude walk.

The highlight of the journey is Lake Kaputan itself: about 3,202 metres above sea level, some 10 hectares in area and around 22 metres at its deepest. Cradled among the peaks of the Zangezur ridge, the lake is known for the rich colour of its water, which shifts with the sun, the clouds and the weather. At this altitude there are virtually no signs of civilisation, only mountains, stones, alpine plants and high-mountain silence.

On arrival there is time to rest, take photos, stroll a little and view the lake from the accessible viewpoints. How long we stay is decided by the mountain guide, taking into account the weather and how the group is feeling. Then we head back down to the jeeps, descend the mountain road to the Kajaran area, switch to our main vehicle and drive back to Yerevan, arriving late in the evening of the second day.

This route is made for those who want to see wild, high-mountain Armenia rather than the sightseeing version. It is especially suited to lovers of mountains, jeep tours, alpine lakes, off-road travel, unusual natural places, photography and expedition routes. It is not a classic coach excursion: be ready for a long drive, rough terrain, altitudes above 3,000 metres and a short walk. People come to Kaputan not just to tick off a sight, because the road there becomes the journey itself.

Useful information

Important condition for running the tour

Kaputan lies in the high-mountain part of the Zangezur ridge, close to the border zone. Access to some parts of the area may be restricted.

For this reason the tour runs only after the possibility and legality of access on the specific date has been confirmed in advance. Amaras Tour never sends a group out on the route without first checking the current situation.

If access is closed, the trip does not go ahead, or guests are offered a different high-mountain route.

Booking

Participation is by advance booking only.

To book, please let us know:

  • Your preferred date
  • The number of participants
  • WhatsApp / Telegram: +374 99 250 525

The tour is finally confirmed once the availability of the high-mountain route has been checked.

Day 2: early start → 4×4 vehicles → Zangezur ridge → walking section → Lake Kaputan → return → Yerevan.

We expect to be back in Yerevan late in the evening of the second day. The exact time depends on:

  • Road conditions
  • Weather
  • The length of the walking section
  • Traffic
  • Checkpoint procedures in the region

Not included

Entrance tickets

There is no standard tourist entrance ticket for the natural route to the lake itself. However, because of the area's location, special access rules may apply.

If any official fees, permits or other mandatory conditions arise, guests are informed before payment and confirmation of the tour.

The jeep section

We use high-clearance 4×4 vehicles.

The road may include:

  • Deep ruts and bumps
  • Rocks
  • Steep climbs and descents
  • Streams
  • Mud
  • Narrow mountain stretches
  • Heavy jolting

Please bear in mind that the ride here is far less comfortable than on an ordinary road.

The walking section

Kaputan cannot honestly be advertised as a route where the jeep is guaranteed to drive right up to the shore. Near the top the old jeep track deteriorates, giving way to natural mountain terrain.

So you need to be ready for a final stretch on foot. Its length can vary depending on:

  • Road conditions
  • Weather
  • Water levels in the streams
  • The capabilities of the particular vehicle
  • The mountain guide's decision

When the track is in good shape, the jeep keeps the walking distance as short as possible.

Altitude

The lake sits at about 3,202 m.

At this altitude you may experience:

  • Fatigue
  • Faster breathing
  • Shortness of breath on exertion
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

Move at a calm pace. If you feel unwell, tell the mountain guide straight away.

Footwear

Proper closed shoes are essential for this route.

  • Recommended: hiking boots or trail shoes with good grip
  • Not suitable: flip-flops, sandals, city shoes or shoes with smooth soles

Clothing

Even in summer it can be cold above 3,000 metres.

We strongly recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable long trousers
  • A T-shirt
  • A warm sweater or fleece
  • A windbreaker
  • A waterproof jacket or raincoat
  • A hat

A warm layer is a must even on a hot summer day.

What to bring

We recommend:

  • A small backpack
  • Warm clothes
  • A raincoat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • A light snack
  • Personal medication
  • Wet and dry wipes
  • A power bank
  • Spare socks

Amaras Tour provides water, but you may want to carry an extra personal supply for the high-mountain section.

Meals

Full meals are not included in the price. On the first day there are stops for meals.

On the second day bring snacks with you, as there are no restaurants, shops or cafés up in the mountains. We recommend:

  • Sandwiches
  • Nuts
  • Dried fruit
  • Fresh fruit
  • Energy bars

Weather

The weather on the Zangezur ridge can change very quickly. Expect the possibility of:

  • Strong wind
  • Fog
  • Rain
  • Hail
  • Sudden cold spells
  • Snow at the beginning and end of the season

Even if the weather is fine in Kajaran, conditions at the lake can be completely different.

Mountain stream crossings

The mountain road includes several stream crossings. How much water there is depends on the season.

In early summer, after the snowmelt, water levels are usually higher. Later in the summer the crossings may become easier.

The final decision on whether a crossing is safe is made by the 4×4 driver together with the mountain guide.

Season

This is a strictly seasonal high-mountain route. Dates depend on:

  • The amount of snow
  • Snowmelt
  • The condition of the dirt road
  • Water levels
  • Weather
  • Access rules for the area

Even in summer, each tour date is confirmed individually.

Safety

It is forbidden to:

  • Wander away from the group on your own
  • Head towards the state border
  • Change the route without the guide's approval
  • Climb onto dangerous rocky sections
  • Ignore the guide's instructions

If the situation changes, the guide has the right to stop the high-mountain section and bring the group back.

Not recommended for

The route may be uncomfortable for people who:

  • Handle winding mountain roads very poorly
  • Suffer badly from motion sickness
  • Cannot walk a short distance over rocks
  • Do not cope well with altitude
  • Are not prepared for long drives

If you have a serious chronic condition, it is advisable to check with your doctor before joining a high-mountain route.

Changes to the programme

The high-mountain section depends on conditions beyond our control. Amaras Tour reserves the right to adjust or cancel the mountain part of the route in the event of:

  • Closed access
  • Restrictions imposed by the relevant authorities
  • Bad weather
  • Dangerous road conditions
  • High water levels
  • Other safety factors

The safety of the group matters more than completing the programme at any cost.
